Excellent, thought provoking post. It's all too easy, with the word being thrown around so much, to forget what the word actually means; especially since it is being thrown around by the very people who you are postulting as becoming it.

The emblem you show was used (to the best of my knowledge) by the British Union of Fascists, "a political party in the United Kingdom formed in 1932 by a former Labour government minister and former MP of the Conservative Party, Sir Oswald Mosley."

I am not convinced that 'classic' totalitarian fascism is going to happen any time soon, but certainly we are living in a world that resembles more and more the one presented in 1984.

I've tweeted about this (Sadhbhzilla is my Twitter name). A fascinating read, I don't agree with all of it but really, really found it interesting.
I now desperately want to run a RPG campaign based in an alternative America of the future...

Thanks, Paige. I pray it's all unnecessary concern, and everything will be lovely...

I don't know enough to be able to sensibly critique Paxton, unfortunately. It would seem common sense to expect that there are many different ways things could play out, but I'm significantly concerned either way. I agree completely about Britain, by the way -- we seem to be bypassing fascism and rolling straight towards "Orwellian nightmare", which is also horrific.

And yes, I agree that my intro is stereotyping unfairly. I apologise for that. I wanted to draw attention to the health-care issue in advance, because that has been the cause that a lot of this lunacy seems to have crystallised around. I should probably change the 'if' to 'and'.

I agree with your sentiment, except your introduction:

"If you’re one of the 20% of Americans who opposes universal health-care — in other words, if you’re on the US hard-line right-wing — then in the interests of your own blood pressure, you may want to stop reading this post now."

I oppose universal health-care, but I doubt any of the "hard-line right-wingers" would accept me in their midst. It boils down to freedom and what people think they should have rights to (namely the services/goods of other people), but that is a debate for another post.

I see the connections to Paxton's studies, but I am not knowledgeable enough to say it has no faults (are there other opposing theories?). Still, I don't like the course America is on and regardless if a fascist regime (have you checked out the police state of Britain yet?) actually does rise to power, what we have now is not much better.

"So if you’re in America, and you’re not a dumb white Christian, you really, really might want to start looking for options."

As an intelligent white non-christain, I have looked for options. A few years out of the Marine Corps, I had truly considered moving to Norway. But, I decided I would stick it out because someone is going to have to organize the resistance.
